Men's Intensive Retreat: The Teacher of Reality

This retreat is suitable for men with at least six months of regular meditation practice and prior retreat experience with the Triratna Buddhist Community. Click for more about our single sex activities.

On this intensive meditation retreat for men, we’ll be exploring moving from samadhi (energised calm) to prajna (transcendental wisdom), using The Life and Liberation of Padmasambhava as our guide.

Especially for men who want to challenge themselves to deepen their understanding of Buddhism and meditation at the London Buddhist Centre, the retreat includes six days of silence as well as one-to-one meditation reviews.

The retreat will be led by Jnanavaca and Maitreyabandhu, two of the LBC’s most experienced and respected teachers. It's a rare chance to be on retreat with both of them at the same time.

Maitreyabandhu says: “The retreat is for men who are seeking deeper truths in a superficial world and are committed to undertaking the risk and adventure that requires: men who want to take their meditation deeper in the context of the LBC. It’s only really suitable for men who are up for that kind of challenge..”

The Men’s Intensive is the key men’s event in the LBC’s calendar. Over the years, many men have said it was the turning point in their dharma life.

Pre-retreat study sessions

To prepare for the retreat we’ll be hosting two study mornings in the weeks leading up to it. As the retreat is mainly in silence, we thought it would be good to have a chance, before we go, to get to know each other better, explore how our meditation is going and look at Padmasambhava's teachings. If you can come to both that would be ideal (though you’d be welcome to come to either one). They are just for men booked on the Men’s intensive retreat as a way of preparing for the retreat.

What will we be doing on the retreat?

Meditation:  There will be on-going meditation instruction in both samadhi and prajna, over four well-spaced sessions a day. We’ll gradually build up the amount of meditation as the retreat progresses.

Silence:  We’ll have six days in complete silence, both on and off the grounds, with plenty of time to do nothing, literally nothing at all.

Meditation Reviews: Every other day you’ll have a one-to-one meditation review with an order member on the team, each of whom has many years of experience. The review is to explore your particular life and practice in depth.

Padmasambhava: Padmasambhava is sometimes referred to as the ‘Second Buddha’. Archetypally his focus is on the complete transformation, conscious as well as unconscious, into enlightened liberation. On the retreat, we’ll explore his mythic life story.

Who runs the retreats?

Our retreats are led by experienced Buddhist practitioners who set the programme and guide the retreat. They are supported by a team who are responsible for the practical aspects of the retreat and the cooking. Everyone on the team, including the retreat leaders, is a volunteer who is on the retreat themselves and contributing practically out of a desire to share the benefits of being on retreat with others. The team helps create a harmonious community atmosphere that others can join in with.

A Buddhist retreat is a chance to escape the noise and complexity of modern life and deepen your experience of yourself and of the world around you. It’s not a holiday or a spa, however most people come away refreshed and inspired.

Retreat life is simple, with a daily programme to follow. There will be periods of meditation, talks on aspects of Buddhism and simple rituals as well as free time for rest and walks in the countryside. As the retreat progresses there will be more meditation and longer periods of silence to allow for reflection. On most retreats there will also be small groups led by a team member in which you can discuss your experience of the retreat. Our retreats are known for being friendly, inspiring and enjoyable.

Living communally is an important aspect of being on retreat and you’ll be sharing rooms and meals with others, as well as practising together in the shrine room. It’s often a surprise just how warm the atmosphere of communal life can become on retreat and how supportive it can be for individual practice.

Our retreats are usually for up to 60 people, with most accommodation in shared single-sex bedrooms. We require couples to stay in separate rooms from one another so do let us know when you book if you’re coming with a partner.

We serve three tasty vegan meals a day. If you have dietary restrictions many of these can be accommodated if you let us know when you book. Toast, biscuits, fruit and hot drinks are available via self service at any point on retreat.

How to get there

For all retreats we provide an optional return coach from the London Buddhist Centre in Bethnal Green, which you can add for £50 when you book.

Travel by Car

Vajrasana has car parking facilities which can be used for the duration of a retreat. Please note that we do not have electric vehicle charging stations on site.

Travel by Train

Regular trains run from London Liverpool Street to Stowmarket station. If you are travelling from outside of London, it may be more convenient to get a train into Thetford or Bury St Edmunds. You will then need to get a taxi from the station to Vajrasana. (Please note that although Elmswell is the nearest station, it has no bus link to Vajrasana and taxis will have to come from one of the bigger towns)

Although it is a very supportive environment, we cannot offer any therapeutic help, so if you’re currently experiencing mental health difficulties, grief or any other strong or upsetting states of mind, please consider if a retreat is right for you at present and whether there are other supports you need in your life. If you’re unsure, please email or call us directly before booking.
