Life with Full attention

A Practical Course in Mindfulness

Led by Maitreyabandhu, Amalashri and Jayada

Eight weeks | Starts Wed 4 Feb | 7.15–9.45pm | In person or online

This October, the London Buddhist Centre is coming to Deptford for a four-week course on working with your mind in more creative and expansive ways.

Buddhism is best understood not as a religion but as a path, available to anyone, that lets you see past the distortions of self-concern and come into relationship with reality in all its complex beauty.

Most of the time, the infinite possibilities of the mind remain hidden behind incessant, habitual thought. Yet a life beyond that is within reach.

Location: The Albany, Douglas Way, Deptford London SE8 4AG

Course Description

Much in the way a musician learns to tune and play their instrument, you can learn to work with your mind.

We will show you how. Alongside the Buddhist teachings, you will learn the foundations of meditation — so you can live with greater freedom, openness, and love.

Each week builds on the last — from vision, to practice, to a new way of meeting life. The course works best taken as a whole, but it's fine if you can't make every session.

Zander lives in a residential community at the London Buddhist Centre, where Buddhist practice shapes his daily life. Livia brings nearly two decades of meditation practice. For the past few years they have taught together on Saturday mornings and lunchtimes at the Centre in Bethnal Green, and they're now taking its classes beyond Bethnal Green — starting in Deptford.

Structure of the Course

Week 1

A Bigger Vision

Explore a bigger vision for life — one born not of the story we’ve been told, but of our own direct experience. We’ll look at how Buddhist practice can unlock life’s depths.

Week 2

Coming Back to the Breath

How do we work with, and move beyond, suffering? However experienced we are, we always return to the beginning: this week we turn to the foundational Buddhist teaching of the Mindfulness of Breathing.

Week 3

Energised Calm

There’s a paradox at the heart of practice: the harder we try to let go, the tighter we hold on. This week we explore how to balance effort in meditation — making effort without straining, so that it’s neither too tense nor too slack — allowing a state of energised calm to arise.

Week 4

Receptivity

We experience the world on conditional terms — selecting what we allow in and what we push away. This week we open towards life through the Metta Bhavana, a practice that takes us away from self-centredness and towards a place of unconditionality.

Is this course for me?

Newcomers and experienced practitioners are equally welcome. Buddhism is, after all, about starting afresh — again and again — so that you keep discovering the deepest truths about who and what you are.

By the end of the course you will have all the tools for a lifelong meditation practice.

We hope to see you there!
